Sinombre Vol I: All Hope is Gone

by Paul Miro

1.
I’ll play the dark notes And you play the light. I’ll highlight what’s wrong While you point out what’s right. We watched it unfolding, The whole place under a spell. Kept us focused on heaven While we made our own hell. Though we all pulled together Talked of making a stand And we thought we were clever, Played right into their hands. You were elusive While I tried to be clear: Soon there’d be nothing There’ll be nothing left here. Yeah, soon there’ll be nothing There’ll be nothing left here

End of Days 01:34
People used to live around here. We had everything. Factories and schools, Family houses, hustle-bustle, Firesides and showers and TV dinners. Now it’s all tumbleweed. Car park graveyards and ghost-walk emptiness. The turbines stopped turning. And whole villages burned to the ground. Kids walked barefoot and lived in mud-brick houses. Zoo animals stalked the streets, And it smelled of garbage and rotting food And stagnant water; The homeless, the dying, and the dead. We were scared most of the time. But by then fear had lost all its meaning. Could have been a whisper. Could have been a scream. Some said it was the end of days. Me? I don’t know what to think.

Out on the bleak horizon There rages a storm with no reprieve You let them in with your eyes wide open Now you can’t get them to leave. I see the wolf in the sheepskin Beatin’ on the poor for their plight Bringing calamity one day closer ‘til Everybody takes, everybody takes flight Some of us left for the mainland While others waited behind. All that remain are the haunted faces Giving a voice to the lie They tell me all hope is gone x2 Yes it is Just leave your soul at the doorway Your money ain’t worth nothin’ here I can’t see much in your new world order Except more hatred and fear. Starting to think that we’re done here Whole lotta zip on the news We’ve next to nothing divided now And And everyone’s gonna lose They tell me all hope is gone They tell me that They tell me all hope is gone Yes it is They tell me all hope is gone They tell me that They tell me all hope is gone All hope is gone All hope is gone Don’t tell me all hope is gone Don’t tell me that Don’t tell me all hope is gone No, no no Don’t tell me all hope is gone No, no, no Don’t tell me all hope is gone
4.
How much of life is lost in waiting, Looking to a future we can’t tell? Some paint it bright, Others paint a vision of hell Some dig through the dirt While others reach for the stars But if you don’t slow down, Gonna miss out on who you are. War, murder, rape, torture, pain and slavery. Your mind goes to a darker place And you wonder why I keep the worst from you. There never was a past so bright, Yeah, the trouble is, it wasn’t true. They can’t see what’s in front of their eyes ‘cause they’ve got their minds on their history books And that backhand full of knuckles Was a compliment that you mistook. War, murder, rape, torture, pain and slavery. (Suddenly righteous. Suddenly) I’m tired of all the Hate, fear, ignorance, genocide and bigotry. (Suddenly righteous. Suddenly you) Chorus: Suddenly you are one of the righteous few Trying to tell me what I should do. So what made you suddenly righteous, too? What’s your game? Move along, everything’s tickety boo Yeah, we’ll figure it out like we always do Yesterday’s villains are today’s empowered, Yeah, give ‘em an inch, they’re gonna build the showers. Strip it down, cut to the chase, There’s always someone talkin’ ‘bout a master race Feels like a dog day afternoon Is coming here, and it’s coming soon. War, murder, rape, torture, pain and slavery. (Suddenly righteous. Suddenly) I’m tired of all the Hate, fear, ignorance, genocide and bigotry. Chorus x2 (Solo) Chorus x 2

NEST OF VIPERS Searching for the weak spot When you find it, pound away Ain’t nothing you do’s gonna bring me down I see it every single day. We all protect our secrets With our own insanity Perceive us as a nuisance Rather than a novelty. Taking the long road Riding through the firing line Taking the hard road Hiding where the sun don’t shine Travelling lightly Yeah, this ain’t our first rodeo Light the road brightly Heading for a place to call home Chorus: This is no safe haven I know the nest of vipers that we’re crawling inside There is no safe haven No one is walking on water where the water runs dry. You fight so hard for what you get ‘til you ain’t part of anything at all The trouble is when you analyze You can lose sight of the whole. Yeah, maybe time protects us from The worst of our mistakes All I know is in this life You never get an even break Chorus
7.
No Party 04:24
NO PARTY Pulled from the wreckage of my Life just in time You struck a light and watched it burn. You gather up your wisdom And I’ll gather mine The trial ain’t over, just adjourned. Some of the darkest things I do Are just because you ask me to. A higher class of low life Moved into town Dug deep dark holes where there was light. Bulldozed through all our dream and Razed them to the ground Showed us a darker shade of night. Chorus Some of the darkest things I do Are just because you ask me to. There is no party without you Now all is dark, what can I do? You gather up your wisdom And I’ll gather mine We’ll strike a light and watch it burn Chorus

Travelogue 01:10

Night Fall 04:43
NIGHT FALL Out past the edges of your life Something lies waiting Just like a restless animal. As the smoke rises, it catches your eye In the full moon light Curling and diving, here and gone You cling to the last threads of sleep In a blanket of thorns And every morning awake Innocent and newborn. Dark premonitions Fade into insomniac dawns Where the same Chorus: Hungry creature comes up behind you again Gonna reach ya, You won’t know how, where or when But the creature will seek you out in the end Come the night fall. With a blind determination, You run from calamity. But nothing can save you in solitude. Deep in your imagination It’s coming to burn you To ash in the night, maybe tonight Haunted by singular preoccupations all night. The serpent will climb through your window And come take a bite Hung over from the adrenaline rush of your flight Still the same Chorus
10.
FIND THE BEAST He joined them uninvited in the tree house He gleamed a darkly vulpine smile. His eyes were any colour that you wanted them to be. He said, ‘Looks like we’re gonna be here for a while.’ His words rasped like high voltage wire When he said, ‘Life is only tangled love and hate.’ The words all sounded wrong, Like some razor wire song. Whatever time it was, they knew it was too late. Then he lit up a few votive candles Scorched his hands over the flames. He said, ‘I hope it ain’t too much to handle, But it’s time for us to start the game.’ Chorus: He said, ‘You got to hold me now, You got to show me how, Come on, join me in the evening air Oh yes, you know me now, So let me show you how You got to help me find the beast in there.’ He said, ‘I’m gonna stick around ‘til morning.’ Then took a slug from a pint of Haven Hill. It felt like there were cobwebs clinging to their skin, The air was tropical, but still there was a chill. He dug a hole in the dirt Then ripped a hole in his shirt And whispered, ‘This is where the demon lies.’ Said, ‘You can leave if you wanna.’ But not one of them could move Like they were waiting for the beast to rise. The scars he showed were long and ragged He said, ‘This what I call the gift of life.’ He drew an Indian blade out of its scabbard And told them every gift involves a sacrifice. Chorus They gutted him and tacked him to a fencepost They say that he was grinning when he fell. They wrapped him up in baling wire and harbour stones And they dragged him off and threw him down the well. The lake looked like a teardrop in the distance And no one spoke a word as they walked home. They knew the streets were empty at this time of night, Still had the sense they didn’t walk alone. And as they crept in through the kitchen window Someone sang the strangest song. Their mother was a siren in an evening gown And she beckoned them to come and sing along. She said, ’You got to hold me now You got to show me now, Come and join me in the evening air Oh yes, you know me now, So let me show you how You got to help me Help me find the beast in there.’
11.
DEVIL MAN JUMP Chorus: Hard luck and trouble I wanna be your Hard luck and trouble, oh yeah Hard luck and trouble I wanna be your jumpin’ devil man. With all my Hard luck and trouble I’m gonna make you I’m gonna make you buckle, oh yeah. Hard luck and trouble I’m gonna be your jumpin’ devil man. (a) Devil man jump when you play that tune Make your place a trash dump By the light of the moon I said the devil man jump from morning ‘til noon And he’s gonna tear your heart out. (b) Devil man gone over the sand dune He says that hell is all full, but he’s making some room I said the devil man gone, but he’ll come back soon And he’s gonna tear your heart out. Chorus A B Chorus A
12.
FALL FROM GRACE When I fall from grace I will take you down Into a new disgrace And the beast will rise And too late you’ll recognise There was murder in his blood red eyes And no one will hear you cry Chorus: I will fall again Yeah, I will fall and then I will fall again For every saint There’s a beast A sinner on the shoulder of belief Waiting for a chance to shine. Maybe a drifter or a hitter Or a tracker or a thief; The giveaway will always be The murder in his blood red eyes And no one will hear you cry. Chorus x2
13.
SWIMMING IN THE DOWLING POOL In the darkness contemplating Separating wrong from right From my heart where I’m overstating Black as just a shade of white I try to feed on some other need By following some golden rule A voice of reason for the season Swimming in the Dowling Pool. Just swimming in the Dowling Pool. Chorus So many questions without evidence No one knows it all I’m just the twisted mind In residence, benevolent Can you feel my Visceral antipathy Swimming in the Dowling Pool? Can you feel my Visceral antipathy Swimming in the Dowling Pool? Just swimming in the Dowling Pool I’d tell you all to go to hell But seems like we’re already there It ain’t so bad for Those precious moments Knowing it’s a hell we share I try to feed on some other need But someone has to play the fool A voice of reason for all seasons Swimming in the Dowling Pool. Just swimming in the Dowling Pool Chorus Just swimming in the Dowling Pool Swimming the Dowling Pool I’m swimming in the Dowling Pool Just swimming in the Dowling Pool.
14.
THE ONLY DEVIL They got you chasing ghosts Got you praying to the lords of false hope These days, seems kids can’t take the knocks From three generations of dumb-as-rocks. My own personal cinder block Is you telling me what I ain’t got. Ain’t no amount of Zen in the world Gonna take the hate off that. Statue of Liberty All the huddled masses yearning to be free Or not You got buyer’s remorse Wished you’d chanined your cart to another horse The more you fear, the more you tolerate The trigger finger don’t discriminate, Ain’t no amount of Zen in the world Gonna take the hate off that. Pre: Your double-dealing got you safe and sound, for now. I’m gonna meet you on the way back down. Chorus: Don’t bring me no bad tidings, baby What can a poor boy do? Don’t talk of demons rising, baby, The only devil is you The devil is you. Oxyacetylene There ain’t no crowns but everyone’s a king Cashing their chips, trying to make a deal While there’s trouble in the world of false appeal. You may think I’m the devil, well It’s just because I’ve lived in hell Ain’t no amount of Zen in the world Gonna take the hate off that. Pre, chorus.
15.
SUN’S GONNA SHINE Goes on for days without number Yeah, it seems that way sometimes Feels like you’re being punished For somebody else’s crime. Yeah, trouble’s always brewing Like a storm inside your head Just wanna close your eyes And find you’re somewhere else instead. Chorus Yeah, they say that your eyes Are the window to your soul But what’s the good of being wise When you’re left out in the cold? Oh, baby, I won’t tell you lies A little rain is gonna fall Before the sun’s gonna shine on you Before the sun’s gonna shine on you. Sun’s gonna shine With all your will and perseverance You’ll get there in the end Through all your hours of darkness, Yeah, at least you got a friend Always try to do the right thing But all the souls you try to save Are the meanest sons of bitches on this side of the grave Chorus
16.
Don’t question my motives Don’t build me no shrine Maybe not so you’d notice But it’s been there all the time. I tried to be noble Yes I did, I saw through all the lies They tore up the language Made us food for the flies In a land full of plenty Drove us out of our homes Now the bars are all empty Eveybody’s alone I sailed ‘cross the ocean Through the veil of your tears The wheels are in motion There’ll be nothing left here Got to show some emotion There’ll nothing left here.

about

Having heard the original Sinombré many times since its release it has become one of those albums associated with happy times, holidays and road trips through sunny climes and exciting far-off places. It’s now an unnerving experience listening to ‘Nothing Left Here’ as the underlying message of the ‘end’ rings true on so many levels.
The defeated unfeeling tones of Tony Wright (ex Terrorvision) on the ‘End of Days’ could be a modern day news interview – perhaps a few months in our future, but despite the dystopia the Sinombré message comes in an irresistibly appealing wrapper, I challenge anyone not to nod along to the hypnotic cowboy tempo of ‘All Hope is Gone’ – reminiscent of Monster Magnet at their height.
‘Suddenly Righteous’ lifts the mood with its catchy up-beat chorus of “War, murder, rape, torture, pain and slavery. Hate, fear, ignorance, genocide and bigotry”. Yeah, it has to be heard to be believed.
Sinombré features a number of ‘mood’ pieces like ‘Wilderness’ and ‘Travelogue’ which move the story along but also make sense in the context of the beautiful artwork that accompanies the first chapter. All in all, Sinombré is an immersive sensory experience.
‘Nest of Vipers’ is a superb rock track with some wonderfully dark lyrics, that could have been a single if we still did such things. ‘No Party’ is a glistening moody rumbling gem with the hooks of yore.
‘Night Fall’ sounds like a fast-paced Americana run from a hungry creature – a Western take on a track missed off AP&S ‘Snapshot’. ‘Find the Beast’ is a late-night drunken bar ballad come horror story dripping with bourbon and blood, and the darkest catchiest chorus of the chapter.
‘Devil Man Jump’ is the tune the band would open with if they played your local, think classic Aerosmith meets Black Stone Cherry; a catchy singalong until you realise the words you’re singing. ‘Fall from Grace’ is a sombre poignant anthem that wouldn’t sound out of place as a b-side to Johnny Cash’s Hurt.
Time to take your sorrows ‘Swimming in the Dowling Pool’, named as a nod to the genius of Willie Dowling and Random John Poole’s self-titled sonic project, this chirpy little ditty comes off as a tribute to the might of Willie’s penchant for wordsmithery. The opposite of a wishing well (as Paul himself put it); somewhere you might visit to realise your nightmares. Can you feel my visceral antipathy?
‘The Only Devil’ has a sharp Tom Waits edge and could easily have been the theme for a dark American drama show while the mellow happydrunk Sunday anthem ‘Sun’s Gonna Shine’ could elegantly accompany the credits to this masterpiece of a first chapter.
But there’s one last reminder of the Sinombré story arc in the simpler and slower part 2 of ‘Nothing Left Here’ that will leave you feeling unsure and unfinished.
