Sinombre Vol II: Broken Angels

by Paul Miro

/
1.
They say we’re evolving Well, you could’ve fooled me We’re just slowly dissolving, Fallen fruit from the tree. The winners and losers They all walk hand in hand. Some are born to be leaders, Some wash up on the sand. Now everything’s broken All is blurred and unreal The words left unspoken Truth never revealed We’re all vagabond children Getting stuck in first gear But sooner or later There’ll be nothing to fear Because sooner or later There’ll be noting left here.
2.
THE BIG BLOWDOWN The sirens wailed all afternoon We blanked them out with our favourite tunes And late at night we hid under the stairs Conspiracies reached to the moon Ah, drink up, we’re all dead too soon And sadness just gets bigger when it’s shared The fire burns never ending Come to devour your sacred ground The clowns arrived armed to the teeth Angry white boys trying to dump their grief It seemed our peace was standing in their way The more we tried to hold on hard The faster it all fell apart They trampled on our dignity that day The fire burns never ending Come to devour your sacred ground. Look at the children pretending A hundred miles from the battleground. Chorus: We always hoped they were kidding Waiting for the big blowdown We know the shadows so well Doing some enemy’s bidding Heading for the big showdown. It never changes We mortgage our tomorrows to Get through the day we wake up to And all that’s pure gets lost along the way. How it’s gonna end nobody knows But the power is where the power goes And all that matters is to live for one more day. The fire burns never ending Come to devour your sacred ground. Look at the children pretending A thousand miles from the battleground. Chorus Now we know they weren’t kidding We’re waiting for the big blowdown We know the shadows so well Doing your enemy’s bidding Heading for the big showdown. It never changes.
3.
LIGHT OF THE WORLD Cut through the sandy switchbacks The rocks were saws and blades An unholy, sky-sized silence Come rained on our parade Buying toys as compensation Confusing want with need I’ve been to hell and back again, You cut me and I bleed You cut me and I bleed I stuck to the most obvious, Used words I hoped would sting So blinded by your vanity, You didn’t see a thing I personified deception Threw in some hate and fear I did all that I could to prove There are no saviours here There are no saviours here Chorus We’ve walked too far in the wrong direction Down in the dark underworld We’re gonna head in a new direction Look for the light of the world The full moon pours its heart out The night owl calls a truce A fire burns on the hillside Brings the chickens home to roost Surrounded by the helpless, They’ll only slow us down They need to look for kindness On the other side of town On the other side of town. Our brains are like a lumber house Our prisons are our minds Been drained of some ingredient Can’t seem to read the signs. Our obstinate refusal Our narrowness unfurls It’s got ‘em all convinced they are The centre of the world. They are the centre of the world. Chorus Bridge Won’t you give me consolation Been knocking in vain on your door. I’ve always given in to life’s temptations And then it goes and gives me some more. Chorus
4.
BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH ‘Hey you!’ the spirit called out loud ‘Come rest a while with me. Speak in strictest confidence On everything you see Yeah, and it will go no further Than outside of these four walls. So put a ring around temptation That’s as wide as it is tall.’ Chorus: And I said, ‘My, my You can build my gallows high My, my, my Build them right up to the sky If you give me a reason why My, my You can build my gallows High, high, high.’ He said, ‘You owe no due to humanity, Seems war is all they wage Yeah, you can veil your efforts But you cannot veil your rage Yeah, and it will come to nothing Till you reach the promised land Yeah, and good feels so much better With some evil in your hand With some evil in your hand Chorus ‘Build ‘em up high.’ Chorus
5.
Ghosthouse 01:32
6.
BLUE HOURS, RED LIGHT Take it from the Guys who have more than enough: There’s never enough Waiting for the Weight to fall down from the skies But it never does Chorus: Hope I make it home tonight Hope I get to hold you tight. As long as everybody’s alright I can walk right through Each new blue hour’s red light. Come the new day Finds me calling out your name I try and I fail. I find a new way But it ends up just the same Jonah in the Whale. Chorus. Blue hour’s red light. Chorus. Blue hour’s red light. Blue hour’s red light. I can walk right through Blue hour’s red light. Blue hour’s red light.
7.
Free & Equal 04:20
FREE & EQUAL Don’t discriminate, no He hates us all You can give or take it, That’s your call. Thinks you owe him something Well, ain’t that rich! Gives you tough love like you’re His junkie bitch It seems you liked it so much That you bought the whole store. Then when you found your feet You started kicking the poor. We’re gonna have to do it Like we did it before ‘cause grass roots don’t be growing On the thirtieth floor. Pre: (Shakedown, shakedown) Always getting it right on the money (Shakedown) Trying to follow our dreams (Shakedown, shakedown) Ain’t like we’re here for the money (Shakedown) Listen out for the screams You stuck your hands in the honey (Shakedown) Took it to the extreme (Shakedown, shakedown) Gonna take you out of the running (Shakedown) Now we’re gonna get mean. Chorus: We’re gonna send you back to where you belong More than adrenaline is making us strong Power hungry supervillain turning the screw We’re all free and equal to be better than you. He got magic potion He calls the tune Trying to drain an ocean With a spoon Plants a seed inside us Watches it grow Sowed to be always the The last to know Pre Chorus Solo Chorus
8.
Früher oder später wird es hier nichts mehr geben
9.
DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL Brave enough to play the game Not enough to claim your prize Sometimes the smallest truth Is harder than the greatest lie. Tell yourself whatever you want, You don’t have a prayer It’s always when you’re stepping easy on the ice, It breaks and you drown right there. Chorus: Gonna be a dark night of the soul Gonna place your hand in the begging bowl Gonna take a walk across hot coals Then the devil’s gonna take your soul. Down under the ashes where You laid waste to your lives Waits a fire biding its time ‘til the air brings it back alight. Ain’t as hard as you might think Fooling all the people all the time Let them think they’re helping each other While they’re helping in the greatest crime. Chorus.
10.
Dimestring 02:06
DIMESTRING (Sooner or later) (Sooner or later) Searching for meaning (Sooner or later) Where you knew there was none (Sooner or later) Those dimestring demons (Sooner or later) Pulled your strings all along (Sooner or later) Try as you might, You’ll never pay all your dues (Sooner or later) Just an old, cold soul With nothing to lose
11.
Too Late Now 04:45
TOO LATE NOW Life is a river where the waters runs too deep Through a town full of promise That not one of us could keep My rhyme and my reason were under house arrest So I took what I wanted And I left behind the rest And it’s Too late now It’s too late now It’s too late now for us And it’s It’s too late now It’s too late now It’s too late now for love The diner is open, your order’s on the rail: A bowl of feigned civility With a heaped side of betrayal. It’s all an illusion from the same old bag of tricks And no makeshift redeemer Is gonna help you find a fix Don’t make it Too late now It’s too late now It’s too late now for us Don’t make it Too late now It’s too late now It’s too late now for love There is no glory like we told ourselves We’re all the same some place inside Life is a story that we mould ourselves Whatever place you choose to hide You won’t win my hatred That’s a bell you can’t un-ring Yeah, sadness is all I fell For all empty, soulless things. I’ll keep on believing, I’ll do everything I can ‘cause I don’t believe evil Beats in the heart of every man Nor that it’s too late now It’s too late now, yeah It’s too late now for us Don’t tell me that it’s It’s too late now It’s too late now It’s too late now for love It ain’t too late Too late for us.
12.
THIS IS YOUR LIFE There’s always a story If you show yours I’ll show you mine Love to keep it between us But seems everyone wants to pry And clip off the wings So the brightest of birds never fly Tell me your story How you came to be here one more time You were guided from all that made sense Into trouble and strife And told in no uncertain terms, today This is your life (x4) Make up a story One where it feels good to be alive Not where carnival freaks Bring the cruel underbelly to light. Then, just when you thought it was over… Chorus: Don’t let anything come between us Stay here tonight, Yeah, this is your life. Won’t let anything come between us Yeah, stay by my side Because This is your life Just like all who came before you You ain’t gonna like what you might find. The carnival freaks Are presenting the same show tonight. You know it will never be over Chorus. This is your life x 6
13.
BROKEN ANGEL My broken angel Sometimes it stings It’s gonna take a while For me to process everything Then I won’t come back I won’t come back Know what I know, yeah but Not what it means I’ll stick around till morning And we can talk about our dreams And how they don’t come back They don’t come back I’m tired of pretending, really It’s hardly the place, I feel It counts for nothing The simple truth Is we just do the things we want And hope it’s what you wanted too And then there’s no way back There’s no way back I’m tired and my head is reeling It’s hardly the place, I feel Chorus: Give me the strength for another day Give me the chance to be free Give me the sense find another way Give me the strength to be me. I’ve got to be me. You know I’ll always be there When the hard times come around Yeah, they say that the last chances Are the hardest to turn down And it ain’t so black It ain’t so black I’ve never played that game, yeah And you know I never will That goes someway to explain Why I’ve been running to stand still But I won’t turn back I won’t turn back I’m tired and my head is reeling It’s hardly the way I feel. Chorus. (Trombone solo) Chorus.
14.
GIVE SOMETHING BACK I don’t keep too many secrets I find that trouble’s better outside than in I try to battle my weakness Guess I should’ve chosen one I could win Sounds like the gloves have come off And there ain’t no restraint. You know a deal is a deal ‘til the day that it ain’t. It’s such a smooth operation Trying to cover their stink Now we got too much information And don’t know how to think You know that, viewed from above It’s gotta look like playground stuff That’s far enough You’ve had it your own way Chorus 1: You’ve got to give something Give something back Back to the people, I say Give something Give something back What you’re doing is not in my name Never again There are too many secrets Designed to fill you with a sense of regret But for all of the defects We haven’t found another way yet We all got desensitised generations ago Yeah, just ask someone pathological ‘cause they always know And everybody’s asking Have the good time all gone? It’s always hate creates the problems While it solves not one You know that it’s in my blood I can’t keep my big mouth shut It’s gone far enough You’ve had it your own way. Chorus 2: You’ve got to give something Give something back To all the beautiful people Give something Give something back What you’re doing is not in my name Never again I know your days are numbered It’s only a matter of time You got to Give something Give something back You’ve got to give something Give something back Back to the people, I say Give something Give something back Back to the people, I say Chorus 2
15.
We were all wrong But I hope you’re alright Chasing the darkness To make room for the light. Our bets were all covered Yeah, just so you know We’ll try to add something Before it’s time to go. Some still run from the danger Some still play by the rules Things will only get stranger While we’re governed by fools. All that you trusted And all you held dear Amounted to nothing Now there’s nothing left here. Yeah, It all turned to nothing Now there’s nothing left here.

about

By the time Sinombré II was released the old refrain of ‘Nothing Left Here’ was familiar and comforting like a hot coffee on a frosty morning; so the Sinombré II take on this classic is a delightful bolt from the blue, sounding as it does like full on AP&S of old.
‘The Big Blowdown’ is a slow train back to desolation with two loaded shotguns and a shit-eating grin; it’s grim and dark out there but you know the ride’s gonna be fun. ‘Light of the World’ is the colourful crazy dealer vagabond you meet on the journey with coat pockets filled with charms you need for this chapter. Spend your coins, they ain’t worth shit now anyway.
Some have said these tunes are the greatest Miro has penned, I’d argue that’s a hard act to follow but if you want to judge for yourself you could do a lot worse than spinning ‘Build My Gallows High’ which has all the ingredients of a timeless anthem for this generation given the news these days.
‘Ghosthouse’ drags you right off the wagon and into a deserted barn that pricks the hairs on the back of your neck. Combined with the forthcoming ‘Dimestring’ it’s unnerving in a Slipknot’s ‘Prosthetics’ kind of way, a scary interlude before ‘Blue Hour’s Red Light’ thrusts a beer in your hand and directs you to a campfire of fellow weary wanderers. The warmth is welcome in the cold night of the desert. Soak it up, camaraderie is sparse these days.
Certainly, by the time you’re ‘Free & Equal’ you’re looking at yourself in a mirror and wondering ‘friend or foe’? With nods of Josh Todd covering Alice in Chains you’re being taunted by your own horrors, and the monks of ‘Nichts Mehr Geben’ can offer nothing more than nothing to settle your restless spirit.
Time for some true self-realisation and a ‘Dark Night of the Soul’, a gem of warped Americana with some reassuringly expensive guitar licks but close your eyes and the Devil’s gonna take your soul. Sooner or later you’ll remember the darkness waiting for you, sooner or later.
As the early morning rays of ‘Too Late Now’ wake you from your slumber, you begin to think there’s hope, something worth fighting for. I have to say I fucking love this track, probably my most played Sinombré II song, the guitarwork and the vocals only Miro can channel, it’s just beautiful – achingly sad but beautiful.
Back on the wagon and picking up pace ‘This is your Life’ is a nod to previous Miro in BOATS and Earthly Powers, a perfect pop rock celebration that is bookended by the dark world of Sinombré and the haunting vocals of ‘The Last Siren’. Followed up with the delight that is ‘Broken Angel’ a chilled rat-pack style symphony of strings, laid back vocals and trombone to soothe your weary soul.
Things are looking up, time to ‘Give Something Back’ to all the beautiful people with a track that smacks of an imprisoned blast-out rock hit with some soaring vocals and air punching moments wrapped in a slow train tempo and earworm guitar work that even the Eagles would approve of.
Is this it? Did we make it through? Did the sunshine drive away the fear?
Perhaps there were only going to be two chapters to the Sinombré story when he first dreamt it up.
But at what cost, what did it amount to? What do we have to show?
If it is the end… there is Nothing Left Here.
